Cal State Long Beach offers iBASEt MES Training in First Manufacturing Engineering Certificate Program

Lake Forest, Calif., March 8, 1999 – Cal State University Long Beach (CSULB) will use iBASEt's Solumina, a paperless manufacturing execution system (pMES), as a standard training module for a new course offering in the university's Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering Certificate and Undergraduate Programs, the first of it's kind in any university. This new course, Design for Manufacturing, Assembly and Supportability, will initially be offered to Boeing Company employees at its Airlift and Tanker Programs unit and then will include students from similar industries whether new or returning as adult participants.

Dr. John Campbell, instructor for the CSULB program and director of production processes at the airlift and tanker unit said of the partnership, "The goal of our program is to improve the skills of industrial engineers and manufacturing engineers, some of whom do not currently hold engineering degrees.  We are offering this certificate program in hopes that these engineers decide to continue to achieve their bachelor's and master's degrees."  The need for manufacturing training and certification has been evident for quite some time, and is now made possible through CSULB's certification process.

"We want students to get excited about using pictures and video to describe processes," said Campbell.  "The retention level is so much higher when an instruction is given visually.  Solumina offers image-based electronic delivery of work instructions.  It's natural to join forces with iBASEt because Boeing Airlift and Tanker is already using the software in our C-17 plant.  So, as students finish the certification program, they are fully prepared to transition onto the manufacturing shop floor."

Phil Davis, president and COO of iBASEt said, "This program gives us the opportunity to educate the workforce with the kind of information the factory demands now and in the future.  Students will see an overview of manufacturing and will receive knowledge of what management needs to know about the shop floor."

iBASEt's Solumina software will be used in the new aerospace manufacturing laboratory.  Students are required to complete a design project (CAD) using manufacturing equipment, working step by step through the Solumina MES module, giving them hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, including plant operations.  They will use original sketches to develop a production plan, using the process planning module, and convert the plan into work instructions.

Boeing Airlift and Tanker Programs, which builds the C-17 Globemaster III cargo plane for the U.S. Air Force, is a 1998 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winner for business excellence.  The airlift and tanker unit also maintains and manages the U.S. Air Force's B1-B program as well as its Special Air Mission Aircraft program and the Unique Fleet Aircraft for the U.S. Navy.  It is a business unit of the Boeing Military aircraft and Missiles Systems Group, one of four operating elements of The Boeing Company of Seattle.

CSULB is a comprehensive, urban university with an enrollment approaching 30,000 students, one of the largest campuses of the 23-member California State University system.  The university has achieved national recognition for its aggressive recruitment of high school valedictorians and National Merit scholars from California high schools; currently 250 of these President's Scholars study at the campus.  One of the largest in the West, the College of Engineering offers a broad spectrum of programs in engineering, engineering technology and computer science leading to the bachelor's, masters and joint doctoral degrees.  Its highly qualified faculty provides excellent technical, research and practice-oriented programs for educating high-tech professionals.

iBASEt, founded in 1986, is a leading provider of high-tech software solutions and services.  iBASEt has pioneered the first image-based work instruction system in the complex assembly, aerospace and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) markets today.  By making the shop floor paperless, users report that iBASEt' pMES solution has significantly improved productivity, increased throughput, and provided cost savings in the millions of dollars per year.
