Shopfloor 2000 User Wins Malcolm Baldrige Award

Lake Forest, Calif., December 10, 1998 – Boeing Airlift and Tanker (A&T) Programs, Long Beach, Calif., has been chosen to receive the 1998 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for manufacturing. The Boeing Company business unit was chosen to receive the Baldrige Award  based on its demonstrated quality and business performance excellence.

The airlift and tanker unit uses Telecom Solutions, Inc.'s (TSI) Shopfloor 2000™ (SF2K), a paperless, manufacturing execution system (MES), on its C-17 program.  SF2K is designed to streamline production with improved quality by capturing expert data critical to complex manufacturing processes. Other Boeing A&T Program products and services include the KC-10 Air Force refueling aircraft, the C-32A Executive Transport, the C-40A U.S. Navy Fleet Essential Airlift and maintenance support for the C-17s and KC-10s.

President Clinton and Secretary of Commerce William Daley issued a joint press release announcing the selection November 17.  The Boeing Airlift and Tanker Programs was one of three companies selected to receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige Award established to recognize U.S. companies for their achievements in quality and business performance, and to raise the importance of quality and performance excellence as a competitive edge.  The other 1998 Malcolm Baldrige Award winners are Solar Turbines, San Diego, Calif., and Texas Nameplate Company, Inc., Dallas, Texas.

David Spong, vice president and general manager of Airlift and Tanker Programs, commented about the win, "Meeting the standards required for the Baldrige award has helped Boeing Airlift and Tanker Programs achieve world leadership in quality operations.  This kind of agility comes from people and processes that have significantly improved our bottom line.  Not long ago, we were over budget and behind schedule.  The team responded by focusing on quality.  Working together in integrated product teams with suppliers and the government, continuous quality programs were emphasized and we began to see success."

John Campbell, director of production processes at Boeing Airlift and Tanker comments, "Emphasizing first time quality, effective processes, and introducing technology such as Shopfloor 2000 into production improvements resulted in  significantly improved processes as well as significant cost savings."

Phil Davis, President and COO of TSI, added, "We are extremely honored to be part of the Boeing Airlift and Tanker Programs unit success that has lead them to receive this award.  In fact, when SF2K implemented Shopfloor 2000 into the C-17 program, we became the first company to deliver a paperless shop floor solution of this magnitude.  SF2K's strength lies in providing a unique product built by people trained in manufacturing vs. software developers -- individuals who clearly understand the exact needs of the shop floor.  We also have demonstrated the ability to complete a large-scale project on-time and within budget."

Airlift and Tanker Programs is a part of Military Aircraft and Missile Systems Group, the St. Louis-based defense segment of The Boeing Company.  Airlift and Tanker builds the C-17 Globemaster III for the U.S. Air Force, and is also responsible for aerial tanker aircraft and other U.S. Air Force/U.S. Navy airlift programs.

TSI, founded in 1986, is a leading provider of high-tech software solutions and services.  TSI's SF2K division has pioneered the first image-based work instruction system in the complex assembly, aerospace, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) markets today.  By making the shop floor paperless, users report that Shopfloor 2000 has significantly improved productivity, increased throughput, and provided cost savings in the millions of dollars per year.
